How to Check Your Hotel's AI Visibility
You can test how AI search describes your hotel yourself. Here is what to ask, where to ask it, and what to do with the answers.
What AI visibility means for a hotel
AI visibility is whether AI search tools name your hotel when a traveler asks for a recommendation, and whether what they say is accurate. It sits alongside your Google rankings, and it depends on many of the same signals: clear facts on your own site, consistent listings, and mentions on sources these tools trust.
No single score captures this. An honest check comes from reading the real answers to real questions, which is why the steps below use the platforms themselves.
Four steps to check it yourself
- 1
Write the questions your guests ask
List ten to twenty questions a traveler would ask before choosing a hotel in your market. Mix broad questions such as "best boutique hotels in [city]" with specific ones such as "where to stay near [attraction]" or "hotels with a rooftop pool in [neighborhood]". Add a few that name your hotel directly.
- 2
Run them on each AI surface
Ask the same questions in ChatGPT, Perplexity, Google AI Overviews, and Google AI Mode. Use a logged-out or clean session where you can, because personal history can change the answer.
- 3
Record what each answer says
For every answer, note whether your hotel is named, whether the facts are right, which competitors appear, which sources are cited, and whether the link goes to your own site or to an OTA.
- 4
Repeat on a schedule
AI answers change from one run to the next, so one result proves little. Run the same list each month and look at the pattern across questions and platforms.
What the answers tell you to fix
Your facts are missing or wrong
State room types, amenities, location, parking, and policies in plain language on your own site, and keep them consistent with your Google Business Profile.
AI tools cannot read your site
Confirm that your robots.txt does not block the crawlers these platforms use, that key content is in the page HTML, and that LodgingBusiness schema matches what the page says.
Competitors get named and you do not
Read the sources cited in those answers. They show which destination guides, publications, and review sites shape your market, and where your hotel is absent.
Answers link to OTAs instead of you
Build pages that answer the question better than a listing can: neighborhood guides, amenity pages, and clear reasons to book direct.
